My current 5-year-old PC doubles as my media center, and it’s starting to show it’s age. It’s slowing down when I add new media to it and it’s time to get something a bit more different.
The “ANEWISH Z4 Android 5.1 Rockchip 3368 TV Box” is what I was looking for. It’s small powerful android OS based machine. It comes preloaded with “Kodi” media center and a few other apps like Facebook and Media players.
The Octa-core CPU is powerful enough to playback Full 1080p HD / 3D and even 4K video (unfortunately I don’t have access to a 4K screen but 4K video still looks great on my 1080p screen.) The device does need a few mins to update itself once you power it on and Like other reviewers have suggested, it’s best to plug-in a network cable till it’s all updated. The remote packaged with it is basic and functional, but you might want to plug-in a USB keyboard or Wireless mini-keypad when setting up Kodi, as you need to enter in a lot of text. Because it’s and Android OS you can install a lot of the apps you have on your phone or tablet.
It comes in a very nice presentation box, the manual provided is useful but translation needs a bit of work. But the device is very much Plug and play. In the box you get the Media hub, a Mini-HDMI to Normal HDMI cable, UK power adapter, Remote Control and a AV cable (To connect it to older TV’s that don’t have HDMI but have the Red/Yellow/White RCA connectors.)
It is best not to log in to your Google account on the device until you’re comfortable using it. Then you can replace the provided version of Facebook, Kodi, Gmail with a more recent versions. The device has 16 Gb of memory and 12 Gb or so is usable, but it had a Micro SD card slot as well as 2 USB ports and It also has a “OTG” usb port. So you can plug-in a number of USB sticks or Portable hard drives to store content and keep the device memory available for apps. The Device only has 2 buttons, a main On/Off button on the top and a small “Reset” button at the bottom.
As it’s an Android device their will be “custom” and updated “ROMs” available. The Device is based on the “Z4” Media hub there is already an Android “Marshmallow” beta OS released. But I’ll be using the device as is for the next few months as is before I go experimenting with other Android versions (or even Ubuntu Install) But after looking around I’m having problems finding and installing other ROM’s so looks like I’m stuck with the default OS version at the moment.
In short, it’s a small powerful media hub. That will play everything you can throw at it without breaking a sweat. The device can run a bit how but it’s not a big problem.
I was kindly given a discount so I could buy the “ANEWISH Z4 Android 5.1 Rockchip 3368 TV Box” for a review. My views are my own and not influenced by anyone.
